Clayboy’s Shave Ice is a locally owned Hawaiian shave ice business founded in 1991 by brothers Scott and John Styer. Originally located with their cart on Bethesda Avenue. After spending several years living in Hawaii, Scott learned and perfected the authentic process of making Hawaiian-style shave ice. He was trained by the legendary Aaron Furujen, who has operated a renowned shave ice business in Hawaii for more than 65 years.
Inspired to bring the relaxing spirit of island life back to the mainland, Scott and John launched Clayboy’s in his hometown of Bethesda, Maryland, blending authentic Hawaiian flavors with the energy of a growing suburban community. What began as a passion project quickly became a beloved local favorite, serving generations of customers for over 30 years.
In 2021, after three decades of successful operation, Scott decided to pass the torch. Clayboy’s Shave Ice is now proudly owned and operated by Bill and Dan McKinnon, lifelong fans who grew up enjoying Scott’s famous shave ice. Committed to preserving the roots and traditions that made Clayboy’s special, Bill and Dan are also expanding the brand to share the joy of authentic Hawaiian shave ice throughout the DMV (D.C., Maryland, and Virginia) community.
